Long Term Addiction Treatment

Anyone who has experienced substance abuse or seen a loved one suffer from it knows all too well that a short stint in a 30-day drug rehab program isn’t always enough. The path to a successful recovery from substance abuse requires time, perseverance, and support.

What is Long Term Rehab?

According to the US National Institute on Drug Abuse, a rehabilitation period of 90 days or longer is typically needed to allow enough time for a patient to recover fully. While many patients may resist going into a long-term addiction treatment center, the longer they stay at a rehab center, the higher the chances of successful recovery.

Overcoming Addiction with Long-Term Rehabilitation

A personalized long-term rehabilitation program can be highly beneficial in helping someone overcome an addiction. The additional time allows for a person to focus on and heal from the various struggles associated with substance abuse as they gradually progress through treatment. Long-term rehabilitation is ideal for severe addictions that may require more intensive levels of treatment.
Addictions that can be effectively treated with long-term rehabilitation include:

Long-term rehabilitation programs will be custom-designed to meet the needs of each person based on their unique circumstances and type of addiction. Each case will be handled as a unique individual to ensure the best possible treatment.

Benefits of Longer-Term Programs

Substance abuse involves several factors, including emotional issues and triggers, social situations, personal relationships, and daily habits. The main benefit of long-term rehab centers is the gift of time. In some 30-day rehab programs, the first several days or weeks may be focused on the detoxification stage, leaving little time to break old harmful habits and form new ones.

A 2009 study performed by researchers at University College London, UK, showed that it takes most people an average of 66 days to form a new habit and stick with it. However, individual times varied from 18 days to a one-year drug rehab program. Patients likely need more time to shed old, detrimental habits and form new, productive ones.

When an individual enters a long-term inpatient rehab center, they gain a support network of trained therapists, counselors, medical professionals, and support from other patients. Together, the people at a facility create a healthy, positive environment to heal and grow as an individual. Being away from home can help make distance from old, emotional triggers that contributed to substance abuse, as well as from the people that may have encouraged or triggered past behavior.

Long-term centers provide a person with the time to examine their life, mend broken relationships, and re-integrate successfully into society by offering support along the way.

Beachway offers customized therapy plans that are tailored to each individual’s needs. Using a multi-therapy approach to our care, each patient can simultaneously address the root causes of their substance abuse and begin the healing process.

Is Long-Term
Rehabilitation Right for You?

Long-term rehabilitation programs are an excellent option for adults who are suffering from an addiction and have been unable to overcome it with other treatment methods and shorter-term rehab. Long-term rehab provides its patients with the added benefits of more time, support, and education. Remaining on-site at a professional rehabilitation center also provides patients with a safe escape from outside influences that can otherwise be difficult to remove oneself from in normal everyday life.

Long-term rehabilitation is best suited for those who:

  • Are you struggling with a severe addiction or have an extensive history of addiction
  • Have been likely to experience chronic relapse
  • Can commit to an average of three months spent in long-term rehabilitation

How Long is
Long Term Rehab?

The length of treatment varies greatly depending on an individual’s needs. It can take anywhere from 90 days up to two years; however, most treatment places (including the outpatient phase) last between 6 to 12 months.

Some guidelines that will help determine whether an individual might benefit from a long-term program:

  • They have severe substance addictions.
  • They are one of the 5 types of alcoholics.
  • They have suffered from substance or alcohol problems for many years.
  • They have already attended one or more detox and/or short-term rehab programs with little success.
  • They have experienced many relapses following treatment.

What Happens During Long Term Treatment?

Long Term rehab programs are usually broken into phases from which an individual may progress.

Typically, the first phase is Detox and occurs only when medically necessary; this phase involves safely ridding the body of toxic substances and under medical professionals’ guidance.

The next step is Residential; this is where a patient can participate in various therapy groups while still under 24-hour care. After the residential treatment phase, patients will step down to outpatient levels of care; this is where they will begin to experience more independence while participating in group and individual therapy.

Addiction is a disease. Every patient is presented with an individualized treatment plan. We aim to address the deep-seated emotional and mental health issues that often accompany this disease.

Activities to Promote Recovery

Attending a longer-term treatment program allows the patients at Beachway to learn how to enjoy life without drugs and/or alcohol. Some healthy activities that we include in our program are:
